biomaterials hackaton 2025

This Friday, February 21st, the Biomaterials Hackathon 2025 will bring together leading researchers, industry professionals, and approximately 45 students from across Europe to tackle some of the most pressing biomedical challenges of today. In addition to fostering innovation, SBMC will award a €10,000 research grant to the winning team to further develop their proof of concept, accelerating real-world impact in biomaterials research.

Participants will work on 15 cutting-edge challenges, including:

  • Developing a bioartificial kidney to transform kidney treatment
  • Engineering smart biomaterials for improved cartilage regeneration
  • Creating biomaterial-based solutions for herniated intervertebral discs
  • Restoring proprioception in the knee joint
  • Exploring biomaterial strategies for urethral reconstruction

These projects aim to accelerate innovation in medical biomaterials, with direct implications for patient care and technological advancements in the field.

A Strategic Milestone for Brainport

Brainport Eindhoven region is making significant strides towards becoming an international biomaterials innovation hub. This first collaboration between the partners who signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the end of last year—including SBMC, High Tech Campus Eindhoven, BOM, TU/e, Fontys Hogescholen, Helmond Biotech-Materials Hub, and Brainport Development—marks a major step in strengthening the region’s position as a global leader in biomaterials innovation.

The goal of this Hackathon is to enhance regional innovation capacity, foster cross-sector collaboration, and attract international investment to accelerate the development and commercialization of smart biomaterials for medical applications. The SBMC Hackathon acts as a catalyst for this vision, bringing together top talent and expertise to drive meaningful progress.

By supporting and engaging in this Hackathon, companies, research institutions, and investors have the opportunity to connect with emerging talent, explore new partnerships, and contribute to groundbreaking biomaterials research.
