Do you enjoy hands-on laboratory work and are you looking for a versatile role in a fast-growing, dynamic environment? If so, you might be the candidate we are looking for!
Smart BioMaterials Center (SBMC) is looking for a
Senior Lab Technician
with a strong background in materials science
Why join us?
- Impactful Work: Contribute to projects that can change lives and advance medical science.
- Career Growth: Play a key role in shaping our development facilities and processes as we grow.
- Dynamic Team: Collaborate with passionate, talented individuals in a flat organizational structure with an open culture.
Your Role
As a senior lab technician, you will be primarily responsible for the hands-on execution of standardized and validated test methods within an industrial and regulated environment, while contributing to the development and optimization of these methods. The primary focus is on work carried out in our materials laboratory in materials fabrication and characterization techniques. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working at the interface of research, development, and quality, and who wants to remain actively involved in both hands-on experiments and technical method development. It is specifically intended for professionals with prior industry laboratory experience who are familiar with working under regulated conditions and quality requirements.
Responsibilities and activities
- Perform material fabrication and material characterization experiments within contract research and applied R&D projects.
- In the materials laboratory, you are the knowledge holder for the rheometer, tensile tester, SEM, and electrospinning equipment. Experience with these techniques is essential.
- Execute standardized and validated test methods in accordance with established protocols and quality requirements.
- Taking the lead in set-up, optimization, and validation of test methods in collaboration with lab and quality colleagues.
- Investigate and resolve technical and experimental challenges using a hands-on and analytical approach.
- Analyze, interpret, and process experimental data, and report results to the project leader.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of laboratory workflows, methods and quality practices.
- Communicate experimental results and technical insights clearly to both internal colleagues and external customers, contributing to effective collaboration and customer satisfaction.
- Maintain accurate documentation and reporting in compliance with quality standards.
In this role, you will be actively involved in experimental work for customer projects, while also supporting and guiding customers working in our shared laboratory facilities. Each project is unique, making the work highly diverse, dynamic, and intellectually challenging. Together with a multidisciplinary team, you will translate customer questions into robust experimental strategies and deliver high-quality results. In addition, you will take initiative in developing, improving, and executing standardized test methods and protocols, contributing to the ongoing development of our laboratory capabilities.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field such as materials science, chemical engineering chemistry, biomedical engineering or a related field.
- 5-8 years of relevant laboratory experience, preferably in materials science or biomaterials.
- Proven experience with laboratory instrumentation such as tensile tester, rheometer, SEM, electrospinning is essential (knock-out).
- Proven experience in executing standardized and validated test methods within an industrial ISO13485 and/or GLP-regulated environment is also essential (knock-out). Experience contributing to method development is a plus.
- Affinity with cell–material interactions is a plus, but without the materials science knowledge and experience it is not sufficient to be considered for the position.
- Strong hands-on laboratory skills combined with analytical thinking.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team, while taking initiative in your own projects.
- Accurate and structured approach to documentation, reporting, and quality compliance.
- Fluent in English, both written and spoken.

About SBMC
SBMC is an innovative startup that supports companies in accelerating and commercializing breakthroughs in regenerative medicine and biomaterials. Regenerative medicine focuses on developing advanced therapies that repair, replace, or restore damaged cells, tissues, and organ functions, often supported by smart materials that stimulate the body’s natural healing processes. SBMC is part of the national RegMed XB Regenerative Pilot Factory, an initiative made possible by the Dutch National Growth Fund.
SBMC operates two state-of-the-art facilities in Eindhoven: a development facility and a pilot production facility. In our development facility, we support companies in the R&D phase by performing contract research projects and offering shared laboratory access. This facility includes two specialized laboratories, a biological ML-II laboratory dedicated to investigating cell–biomaterial interactions and a biomaterials laboratory focused on material fabrication and advanced characterization techniques. Our pilot production facility includes four GMP-C cleanrooms, enabling clients to scale up efficiently from laboratory experiments to pilot-scale production.
